Impossible Burger für Freitage der Fastenzeit?

Chicago’s Restaurants sehen die Fastenzeit als ihre Chance an, ihre Fleischersatzprodukte anzupreisen. „By one get one free“- schrieb Jewl-Osco auf seine Speisekarte am Aschermittwoch 2020. 

In den USA sollen die Katholiken an den Freitagen der Fastenzeit -neben Aschermittwoch- kein Fleisch essen. In Ausnahmefällen sind Bischöfe gerne bereit, eine Dispens zu geben.  Wenn zum Beispiel der geliebte St. Patriksday auf einen Freitag in der Fastenzeit fällt.

So bieten Pfarreien vor allem in der Fastenzeit „Fischfry“ an, was oft viele Nichtkatholiken anlockt. 

Mit der Erfindung der auf Pflanzenbasis basierenden Burger fragen sich nun einige Katholiken, ob sie diese Buletten, die einem echten Stück Fleisch in nichts nachstehen und manchmal sogar noch besser schmecken, essen dürfen. Handelt es sich am Ende um Haarspalterei? 

Einige große Zeitungen -darunter Chicago Tribune- ging der Frage nach. Denn vor allem Schnellrestaurantketten wollen Kunden, und so kommt Burger Kings „Impossible Wooper Burger“ gerade recht. Fleischlose Burger, die dennoch wie Fleisch schmecken, sind ein Bestseller. Wenn auch vorerst nur auf zweiter Stelle. 

Während der Fastenzeit bietet die Restaurantkette Lettuce Entertain You, die sich eigentlich auf Fischspeisen spezialisiert haben, spezielle grüne Chili Impossible Burger an, die mit einem weißen Cheddarkäsen und sriracha Mayonaise geziert sind. Vegetarische Burger sind sehr begehrt- auch von Leuten die Fleischspeisen lieben.  

Epic Burger hat sechs Restaurants in Chicago. An Freitagen der Fastenzeit verkaufen sie 12% mehr vegetarische Burger. Sie erwähnen nicht explizit ihre fleischfreien Alternativen von Aschermittwoch bis Ostersonntag. Sie wollen „religionsneutral“ sein. Dennoch zieht ihre Werbung Leute an. 

„Es ist perfekt für Kunden, die was auch immer für Gründe haben, kein Fleisch zu essen und sich dennoch nicht schuldig fühlen wollen“, erläutert Spencer Most, Produktmanager von Epic Burger gegenüber Chicago Tribune. (1)

Was sind und was enthalten vegetarische Burger? 

Impossible Food wurde 2011 von Pat Brown, einem Chemiker der Standford Universität, gegründet. Das genetisch hergestellte hem-ähnliche Protein gibt dem pflanzlichen Burger nicht nur seinen Fleischgeschmack, sondern auch sein Aussehen. 

Hemeiron ist in Fleisch und Fisch enthalten. Hemeeisen, welches aus einem Hefepilz hergestellt wird, kann vom menschlichen Körper nicht so gut resorbiert werden. Das führt u.a. dazu, dass Vegetarier unter einem Eisenmangel leiden können. 

Wie Impossible Food auf ihrer Webseite beschreibt, benutzen sie leghemoglobin-gene aus der Wurzel der Sojabohne, um daraus einen Hefepilz zu fermentieren. Dann separieren sie heme. Diese Substanz mengen sie ihren Produkten bei und erhalten damit den gewünschten Geschmack, das Aroma sowie die fleischähnlichen Eigenschaften. 

Während bereits 2018 fleischlose Burger in fast 2000 Restaurants in den USA verkauft wurden, bleibt die Frage nach der Sicherheit des Verzehrs ungeklärt. 

Friends of the Earth und ähnlich orientierte Umweltaktivisten, zeigen sich äußerst besorgt. Sie betonen immer wieder: „Wir wissen nicht genug über die Gesundheitseffekte, die auftreten könnten, wenn wir diese Art des gefälschten Fleisches konsumieren. Die schnelle Freigabe für den Markt war kurzsichtig, dumm und voreilig.“ 

In dem Report vom Labor zur Gabel vom Juni 2018, rufen Friends of the Earth zu strikten Sicherheitsmaßnahmen und einer Kennzeichnung des Produktes auf.

Dana Perls, Mitglied der Organisation und Umweltaktivistin, klagt den ehemaligen Bürgermeister von New York, Michael Bloomberg an: „Wir brauchen mehr Daten. Wir sind es den Verbrauchern schuldig, die organische Lebensmittel als Alternative zu GMO bevorzugen. Ihnen ein ungetestetes Chemiefleisch vorzusetzen, ist ein Irrweg.“ 

Ob sie recht hat? Neueste Untersuchungen zeigen, dass Impossible Burger u.a. krebserzeugendes Glyphosat enthalten. Was will man auch anderes erwarten, wenn man GMO-Soya als Ausgangsmaterial benutzt?

Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass eine industrielle Landwirtschaft in einer fast unverantwortlichen Art und Weise knapper werdenden Ressourcen ausbeutet. Unsere Sommer werden wärmer und allmählich kommen wir zu der Einsicht, dass unsere Luft- und Wasserverschmutzung, die Abholzung der Wälder, eine steigende CO₂-Emission, die Nährstoffverarmung, eine Erosion und die Vergiftung unserer Böden durch Factory Farmingmitverursacht werden.

Viele sehen eine nachhaltige, chemiefreie, regenerative Landwirtschaft als eine Möglichkeit an, diesen Bestrebungen Einhalt zu gebieten. Andere wollen sogar ganz auf Fleisch verzichten. 

Es ist allerdings naiv, zu meinen, die so oft als Kuh-KZ bezeichneten Buletten Fabriken, durch Lebensmittellabore ersetzen zu können. Eine Schlussfolgerung, unsere Lebensmittel im Labor herzustellen ist schon deshalb falsch, weil Pflanzenfresser für unser Ökosystem sehr wichtig sind. Fleischersatzprodukte bieten nicht die oft angenommenen umweltfreundlichen Alternativen. Sie sind erst recht nicht in der Lage, unsere Welternährung zu sichern. 

Lebensbedrohliche Umweltprobleme können nämlich nicht von einer Industrie abgewendet werden, die Tierprodukte gegen eine chemisch hergestellte Ware austauscht. Wie eine Studie 2015 feststellte, brauchen im Labor hergestellte vegetarische Fleischersatzprodukte mehr Wasser und Energie.

Vegetarische-Burger der Firma Impossible Foods enthalten Weizen, Kokosnussöl, Kartoffeln und hem,ein Protein, welches gentechnisch aus Hefe erzeugt wurde. Die Organisation Friends of the Earth sind nicht mit einem so hergestellten Nahrungsmittel einverstanden. Sie forderten eine Lebensmittelkontrolle. Ihre Bitte, Biohamburger und andere neue Tierersatzprodukte zu regulieren und/oder eine adäquate Kennzeichnung aufzubringen, wurde abgelehnt. 

Für Impossible Food war jedoch die Prüfung der amerikanischen Lebensmittelbehörde nicht entscheidend, um ihre Veganburger auf dem Markt zu halten. FDA hatte bestimmt, dass die freiwillig aufgebrachte Kennzeichnung GRAS -die auf dem gentechnischen Verfahren (genetic engineered), einer GE yeast derived heme (aus Hefe hergestellte heme) beruht- zu ungenau sei. 

Impossible Food brachte ihr Lebensmittel letztendlich ohne eine FDA Billigung heraus, was in den USA durchaus gestattet ist. 

Gleichwohl gehört der im Labor wachsende fleischlose Burger -der beim Anstechen in der Bratpfanne anfängt, eine rote Flüssigkeit abzusondern und dem Schmoreffekt eines echten Stückes genussvollen Fleisches in nichts nachsteht- zu den vielen Inventionen, die unserer Umwelt mehr schaden, als ihr zu helfen (2).

Was sagen Kirchenexperten der USA zum neu entdeckten „Fastenburger“? Vegetarische Burger stimmen technisch gesehen mit den Fasten-Anforderungen der katholischen Kirche und vieler anderer christlichen Religionen überein. 

„Dennoch kann man den Sinn der Fastenzeit verpassen, wenn man auf Fleisch mit einer Fleischimitation verzichtet“, sagt Todd Williamson, Direktor für Devine Worship, der Erzdiözese von Chicago. 

„Der Grundgedanke der Fastenzeit ist doch, sich mit denen zu identifizieren, die hungern“, erklärt er weiterhin. „Wenn wir kein Fleisch essen, bringen wir auf unsere Weise ein Opfer, das uns an die Kreuzestod Jesu Christi am Karfreitag erinnert. Wenn wir nun etwas essen, das einem echten Stück Fleisch in nichts nachsteht, ist das kein Opfer mehr.“

„Es kommt auf die Intention und Disposition an“, betont die Direktorin der katholischen Hochschulgemeinde des Heiligen Johannes Paul II. der Universität von Illinois in Chicago, Rebecca Siar:

 „Während das „Fake“ Fleisch rein technisch mit den Forderungen der Fleisch-Abstinenz übereinstimmt, sollten wir es nicht aus reiner „Gesetzestreue“ essen. Für uns Katholiken besteht der Zweck darin, kein Fleisch an Freitagen in der Fastenzeit zu uns zu nehmen. Mit einem vegetarischen Burger betrügen wir uns letztendlich selber: Der Sinn der Fastenzeit ist doch, dass wir bewusst auf etwas verzichten und unsere liebgewordene Routine unterbrechen. Wir bringen absichtlich Opfer. Leute, die sowieso kein Fleisch essen, sind deshalb angehalten, eine andere Art der Busse zu tun“, erklärt Siar. 

Rev. Charles Bolser, ehemaliger Pfarrer der St. Viator Pfarrei, bemängelt ein nur  äußerliches Einhalten des Fastengebotes: 

„Es handelt sich um eine Art Zeichen und nicht um etwas, zu dem wir gezwungen werden. Wir müssen uns fragen, wie unsere Taten unser Leben verändert. Werde ich dadurch ein besserer Christ? Oder bleibe ich weiterhin oberflächlich, weil ich nur strikt ein Gebot einhalte. Jede Fastenzeit ist im Grunde genommen dazu da, unsere Herzen zu ändern. (1)“

Krebs überstanden, Kinder weg: Herausforderungen modernen Fruchtbarkeitspraktiken

Die Chance, Kinder zu haben und dennoch ihre Krebskrankheit erfolgreich behandeln zu können, veranlasste eine junge Frau aus dem Bundestatt Arizona, ihre Embryonen sprichwörtlich auf Eis zu legen. Bevor Ruby Torres sich 2014 eine Krebstherapie unterzog, entschied sich ihr damaliger Freund Joseph Terrell, Kinder anhand einer In-Vitro-Fertilisation zu erzeugen. Die Embryonen wurden danach eingefroren. 

Falles etwas schief gehen sollte, wollte man die Embryonen zur Adoption freigeben. 

So stand es im Vertrag. Dieser wurde dem bald darauf verehelichten Paar zum Verhängnis. Ruby überlebte zwar ihre Krankheit, deren Nebenwirkungen unfruchtbar zu werden, sie so sehr fürchtete, dennoch war der Traum von eigenen Kindern nicht mehr realisierbar. 

Wie schon fast zur Gewohnheit geworden, hielt auch diese Ehe nicht lange, sondern nur bis Ruby vom Krebs geheilt war. 2017 ließ sich das Paar scheiden, und damit war das Gericht -wie allgemein üblich- für den Verbleib der Kinder verantwortlich. 

Ruby wollte die Kinder alleine bekommen, aber ihr Ex-Mann protestierte. Er erhob Einspruch, als seine ehemalige Frau seine biologischen Kinder austragen wollte. Eigentlich stand im Vertrag, dass im Scheidungsfalle der andere Partner sein schriftliches Einverständnis geben muss, um die Kinder einem der Partner zuzusprechen. 

Das Familiengericht hielt sich an diese Vertragsklausel. Der Einspruch der Mutter kam nur kurze Zeit zur Geltung und wurde vom obersten Gericht von Arizona dann doch nicht stattgegeben. Keines der Elternteile bekam die Kinder. Sie warten weiterhin auf Eis darauf, dass sie eventuell jemand adoptiert. 

Mit diesem Urteilspruch wurde der Mutter abgesprochen, ihre gefrorenen Embryonen auszutragen. Entscheidend für das Gericht war der Wille des Mannes, der seine Kinder nicht von seiner Exfrau haben wollte. 

Um ein emotionales und manchmal auch logistisches Dilemma auszumerzen, frieren Reproduktionsmediziner Eizellen ein. 

Frauen mit späterem Kinderwunsch, teils auch ohne Partner, homosexuelle Paare und Mütter, die sich einer Chemotherapie unterziehen, nehmen oft diese Reproduktionstechnik in Anspruch, weil sie glauben, dies würde nicht nur die Rechte des Vaters, sondern auch die ethische Lage unkomplizierter machen. 

Die Chancen einer eintretenden Schwangerschaft ist jedoch höher, wenn man auf Embryos und nicht auf Eizellen zurückgreift. Trotzdem überlebet nur ein sehr geringer Anteil der Embryonen ein Einfrieren und späteres Auftauen. 

Deshalb bevorzugen Reproduktionsmediziner aus rein technischen Gründen robustere Embryos. Obwohl man eigentlich nichts über die Langzeiteffekte weiß, welche die so erzeugten Kinder davontragen.

Im Dezember 2019 veröffentlichten dänische Forscher eine Studie, in der sie berichteten, dass Kinder, die in ihrem Embryonenstaus eingefroren waren, später Krebs entwickelten. Darüber hinaus sind die gesundheitlichen Konsequenzen einer In-Vitro-Fertilisation wenig erforscht. 

Es ist über 40 Jahre her, seitdem das erste Baby durch eine In-Vitro-Fertilisation entstand. Seitdem haben sich die Fruchtbarkeitsmethoden verändert. Allein der Zugang zu einer künstlichen Befruchtung ist leichter geworden, womit noch im höheren Alter an Nachwuchs zu denken ist. 

Trotzdem bestehen viele offene Fragen. Kaum etwas ist über die psychische und physische frühkindliche Entwicklung der Kinder bekannt, die einst als Embryos, oder auch nur als Eizelle/Samenzelle eingelagert waren. 

In der am 10. Dezember 2019 im Journal of the American Medical Association veröffentlichte Studie untersuchte Marie Hargreave mit ihren Mitarbeitern über eine Million (genau 1.085,172) Kinder, die zwischen 1996-2012 aus eingefrorenen Embryos erzeugt wurden. Von 100.000 dieser Kinder hatten 44,4 Krebs bekommen. 

Eine Fruchtbarkeitsbehandlung war zwar gedacht, Probleme zu lösen, im Endeffekt kommen wir jedoch nicht darum herum, sie heraufzubeschwören. Die Technologie sollte Unfruchtbaren zum Kind verhelfen. Ohne sie wären sie niemals fähig gewesen, biologische Kinder zu bekommen. 

Einer Umfrage (Pew Research 2018) zufolge haben sich 1/3 der Amerikaner entweder selber einer Behandlung unterzogen oder sie kennen jemanden, der dies tat. All das hat nicht nur soziale, ethische und rechtliche Konsequenzen. 

Man fragt sich: welche Rechte haben Eltern? Was bedeutet es, Vater oder Mutter zu sein? Wer darf sich einer Fruchtbarkeitsbehandlung unterziehen? Und welche Instanz kann diese Fragen beantworten? 

Im Sommer 2018 wurden in Kalifornien Embryonen vertauscht, so dass die Mutter nicht ihr biologisches Kind ausgetragen hatte. Dies zeigt, dass viele der 500 Fruchtbarkeitskliniken der USA sowie eigentlich der ganze Industriezweig weder einer Kontrolle noch Gesetzen unterliegen. 

Im November 2019 bemerkten Wissenschaftler, dass einige IVF-Kliniken Zusatzbehandlungen anboten, die keinerlei bewiesenen Gesundheitseffekte aufwiesen und eher dazu führten, dass die Frauen unfruchtbar blieben. 

In Großbritannien diskutiert man, ob Tote ihre Samenzellen spenden sollten und man diese als eine Art Organspende ansehen kann. Man diskutiert allen Ernstes darüber, dadurch den Samenspenderpool zu vergrößern bzw. einer Knappheit von Samenspendern entgegenzutreten. Man ist allerdings über die ethische Ansicht verunsichert. Vor allem: Wer darf spenden und wie viel – in diesem Falle Samen- darf man von derselben Person beanspruchen? 

„Moralisch gesehen“, sagt der Bioethiker Arthur Caplan, „ist es das Schlimmste, was man jemand antun kann, dass man Nachkommen von ihm erzeugt, ohne dass sie ihr Einverständnis dazu gegeben haben.“ -Wie auch? Der Spender ist tot!

The Hidden Treasures in the Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe

In 2015, high-end designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana called “genetic manufactured children” synthetic designed babies. Later on, and only after the protest of Elton John, Domenico Dolce apologized for using the term to describe “chemical children.” Dolce and his partner did seek a surrogacy as it was the only possibility to arrange a pregnancy for them. As one way of the many assisted reproductive technologies, commercial surrogacy, often linked to fertility tourism, uses a donor egg or sperm and will result in a child that is not genetically related to one of the “intended parents.” Gestational surrogacy was first achieved in April 1986, (1) and most often depends on in-vitro-fertilization. Otherwise, the surrogate’s egg is fertilized in vivo. The so-called traditional surrogacy was first invented in animal breeding and does not rely on the transfer of the embryo into the mother’s womb. 

Domenico Docle and Stefano Gabbana’s baby was ultimately created by in-vitro-fertilization with a surrogate mother. Nevertheless, Dolce opposed genetically designed children.(2) In this regard, it is also important to stress the dehumanizing of women, valued only because they produce oocytes.

The artificial creation of an embryo in a lab dish, i.e., in-vitro-fertilization, mapped out the path to frozen-embryos, surrogate motherhood, human embryonic-stem cell research, cloning, chimeras, genetic editing, genetic engineering, CRISPR-cas9 and whatever we used before in animals or plants. 

Besides, it is common to provide pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), also known as embryo screening. This technology can be conveniently combined with the creation of embryos. Many fertility centers claim that the first five days after conception determine the “success-rate” of an in-vitro-fertilization. Still, besides the goal to optimize embryonic development in the environment of a laboratory dish, no more than 25% to 60 % of human embryos progress to the blastocyst stage. Only the best blastocysts will be transferred on the fifth day after conception into the uterus. At that stage, the embryo has been developed into two distinct cell types and a central cavity filled with fluid. The cells surrounding the blastocyst cavity, the trophoectoderm will form the placenta. The group of cells located in the inner cell mass, the embryoblast, is a human being in the early stages of his or her life. 

The embryoblast became of major interest for scientists, since cells derived from them have the potential to differentiate into all the derivates of primary germ layers ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm. Thus, these pluripotent indefinite self-replicating embryonic stem cells are crucial for all tissue and organ development. Researchers referred to them as the gold standard. Besides the invention of induced pluripotent stem cells created without the destruction of a human embryo, scientist remain convinced to further progress with the reprogramming of adult cells beyond their embryonic like pluripotent character. They want to be able to generate sperm and egg cells. The success of genetic research depends on embryos.   

More than ever people are fascinated by the possibility of therapeutic intervention in the deep structure of the human genome.(3) The first five days of human embryogenesis, -in vivo- hidden from the interreference and exploitation of scientists, determines -in vitro- one’s destiny. 

We all know what happens in embryogenesis. In case you are wondering, after natural conception we start to grow fast and divide into many cells. As the embryo wanders down the fallopian tube it will enter the uterus after the 3-4 days of life. 

In the past, fertility clinics transferred the embryo on day three into the uterus. On that day, embryos are still passing through the fallopian tubes. Due to the “inherent weakness of human embryos” the procedure was postponed to day five. In order to provide “high quality embryos which are capable to continue development and result in live births.” (4)

The fifth day after conception might play another role in human history. 

On December 8, 1854 Pope Pius IX made the infallible statement that the Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ, was conceived without sin and her conception was thus immaculate. The ex-cathedra ruling was defined 1870 during the First Vatican Council. 

The feast of Mary conceived without original sin and without the deprivation of sanctifying grace, dates back to the seventh century. In 1830 St. Catharine Laboure was asked by Mary to create the Miraculous Medal containing the words, Ô Marie, conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous. ("O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee"). In addition, when St. Bernadette Soubirous asked the Virgin Mary on March 25, 1858 to identify herself, Mary revealed to her saying, “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

God created Mary without the corruption that original sin brings. In Luke 1:28 the angel Gabriel greeted Mary as, “full of grace, the Lord is with you” which underlines that she was endowed with grace not as a result of the angel’s visit but indicates that she was graced in the past with continuing effect in the present. She remained free of every stain of personal sin her whole life, through God’s providential action. 

The Dogma pronounced by Pope Pius IX in 1854 assured the singular grace and privilege of God given to Mary in the first instant of her conception based on the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race. We are very familiar with all the fine art and paintings of the Annunciation, however, an angel is also displayed at the image of our Lady of Guadalupe. An image that is beyond human possibilities to replicate. 

Since ancient times the Feast of the Immaculate Conception was celebrated on December 8, thus it is interesting that on December 12, 1531 the Virgin of Guadalupe, or Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, appeared for the last time to the Aztec boy Juan Diego. She told him to collect roses in his cloak and bring them to the bishop. When Juan Diego opened his poncho not only did the twelve roses fall on the floor but also the image of Our Lady was imprinted on its fibers of the Tilma.

To keep in mind, from December 8 to December 12 are exactly five days. An Embryo will be 120 hours post conceptionem near the fundus uteri. 

If you were a placentologist (one who studies gestation and embryonic development) you might see the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe with different eyes. You might see that the image reveals our Lady in the womb of her mother Anna. You will make out the red myometrium surrounding the image. The whole shape of the image will certainly remind you of the shape of a uterus in pregnancy. The “baby,” i.e. the inhabitant in utero is well situated at the fundus, between both uterine tubes.

The medical scholar will see the chorionic villi, the fundamental structures, and the importance they have in the fetal-maternal interface of the placental-uterine anatomy. In the Guadalupe image, Our Lady is standing on the moon. The hypothesis that during the waning moon higher progesterone levels prepares the womb for the possibility of new life is often discussed in science. And beneath is the (previously mentioned) angel situated.  

Implantation occurs in humans 7.5-9 days after conception. Modern contraceptives hinder an embryo from implantation. The uterine lining, sometimes compared to rose petals, is not prepared for the invading embryo.

His Eminence Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, is well known for the shrine he established in La Cross, Wisconsin for Our Lady of Guadalupe. Many pilgrims come to her as the Mother of the Unborn. The Cardinal himself declared most recently that the, “so-called ‘contraceptive mentality’ is essentially anti-life.” Furthermore, Cardinal  Burke stated, “One also thinks of the other most grievous moral evils of our time, for instance, the plague of procured abortion, the wholesale murder of the unborn in the womb, justified as the exercise of the so-called right of the mother to choose whether to bring to term the baby she has conceived. More and more, too, we face the abhorrent practices of the artificial generation of human life and its destruction, at the embryonic stage of development, which are justified as the means to remedy infertility or to find supposed cures for crippling or deadly diseases.” (5)

Cardinal Ratzinger’s homily before his fellow cardinals in 2005 refers to the, “dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires.”  When in 2005 Pope Benedict XVI received the St. Benedict award, he added,  “If there is a lack of respect for the right to life and to a natural death, if human conception, gestation and birth are made artificial, if human embryos are sacrificed to research, the conscience of society ends up losing the concept of human ecology and, along with it, that of environmental ecology.” 

When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to the Aztec Juan Diego, the horrible spectacle of human baby sacrifices to their god Huitziopochtli ended. In this regard, it is more than consoling to see Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Patroness of Synthetic Babies, which seem to be only created for our "scientific" purposes. Essentially, an embryo at his first moment of his life has all information and only needs to grow. This makes a one cell stage embryo so desirable for genetic editing and engineering, CRISPR-cas9 ... When a female baby is born, she carries all of her egg cells for her children. Interestingly, our Lady of Guadalupe is portrait with child herself in the womb of her mother Anna.

Bible exegeses through the lenses of modern biotechnologies

The Tree of Life is not only recognized by people with Christian-Jewish background but also by modern scientists. The latter fits into the description of self-appointed “new atheists”, because of their general suspicion against religion. Nevertheless, what unites us, is the belief in eternal life. Admittedly, it is more as a semantic distinction how we achieve our goals.

Christians view Paradise as the perfect place were Adam and Eve lived in utmost union with God. Isaiah defined paradise as were, “The wolf and lamb shall pasture together, and the lion shall eat hay like the ox, but the serpent’s food shall be dust” (ISAIAH Ch. 65).

The serpent certainly deserves this fate in light of her intervention that caused our expulsion from garden of Eden.  Genesis, Chapter 3, tells us, “Now the snake was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the LORD God had made. He asked the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You shall not eat from any of the trees in the garden;

The woman answered the snake: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden: it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said,” You shall not eat it or even touch it, or else you will die’”

But the snake said to the woman: “You certainly will not die!” God knows well that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, who knows good and evil. ‘

After Adam and Eve disobeyed Gods orders, the “Lord God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden that he could not reach out his hand to take fruit from the tree of life and eat of it and live forever (Gen 3,23).

“Adam and Eve did not die in a physical sense,” explained the famous Roman Catholic theology Professor Dr. Scott W. Hahn in the overfilled parish Church St. Thomas the Apostle at the Southwest Bible Conference in Phoenix, on 16th November 2019. “Physical life is vulnerable,” he added.

To recapitulate, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life.” (John. 1).

In every Tridentine Mass you hear the words: “In Principio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum.”  

St. Thomas Aquinas said God created out of nothing and still continues to create. Whereas, St. Hildegard of Bingen, added, God created not only out of nothing but out of Love.

Dr. Hahn examined in his talk The Covenant of Love. God created us in HIS image as male and female. God explicitly spoke of male and female humans. More precisely, the creation of humans is distinct from all the animals.

Of course, animal reproduction depends on male and females. As on the fourth day, He blessed them, saying: “be fertile, multiply, and fill the water of the seas and let the birds multiply on the earth (Gen 1,22).” But only afterwards, on the fifth day, God said: “Let us make human beings in Our image, after Our likeness (Gen. 1 26) and let them have dominion over the fishes of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth. God blessed them and God said to them: Be fertile and multiply, fill the earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food and to all the wild animals, all the birds of the air, and all the living creatures that crawl on the earth, I give all the green plants for food. And so, it happened.”

“On the sevens day God rested.” In Hebrew the word for seven is Sheva. Sheva means his promise, his oath. Another name is His Covenant,” stated Dr. Hahn. “A covenant is different from a contract. A contract is temporary, and you can walk away, when it is done.

Whereas, an oath is a sacramental swearing. It means, I am yours and you are mine. The base of the covenant was the lifegiving LOVE of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

He made us in HIS image. As male and female. And did breathe his breath into his creation. Not breath in the symbol of oxygen. Instead, by the breath of the Sprit, he gave us our supernatural life. The meaning of eating from the fruit of the forbidden tree is that Adam and Eve lost their supernatural eternal life. The original sin of Adam and Eve, who desired to be like God, was caused by disobedience. They did not die physically, as the serpent suggested. The supernatural life of our first parents has been destroyed by mortal sin.

Supernatural life can be restored by Baptism and through the words of absolution. Specifically, when we live the sacramental life.

Nevertheless, the first parents failed and disrupted the covenant of creation, ipso facto marriage. The covenant designed by God, when he said, be fruitful and multiply and when Adam acknowledged: ‘This is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.’” (1)

His Eminence Cardinal Burke addressed a few weeks earlier as the Southwest Bible Study Arizona’s Physicians with the words that we, “redefine marriage and family life to include a liaison between two persons of the same sex, and of the proponents of the so-called “gender theory,” even among the educators of our children, which is justified as tolerance of so-called alternative forms of human sexuality, as if there were a true form of human sexuality other than that intended by God, our Creator and Redeemer, as He has unmistakably written it in our body and upon our heart.”

Furthermore, his Eminence pointed out, “the respect for human life is related essentially to the respect for the integrity of marriage and the family.” He likewise declared, the so-called “contraceptive mentality” as essentially anti-life. “Many forms of what is called contraception are, in fact, abortifacient, that is, they destroy a life which has already been conceived, has already begun.” (2)

Our time neglects God as our creator. Indeed, it is believed that modern Biotechnologies and their “creators” can do a better job in recreating plants, animals and humans or even animal-human mammals. Often our pride hinders us to recognize that God created us in the beginning and redeemed us after the sin of Adam and Eve. Instead we admire new techniques, and only a few question hybrids, stem cell research, cloning, genetic edited-, and genetic engineered organisms. We experiment and destroy our fellow humans at the beginning of their life and justify our actions by treating old people, and to find a therapy for deadly and crippling diseases.  We are proud to provide a remedy for infertile man and women with in-vitro-fertilization (IVF). Whereas, a woman stays after an in-vitro-fertilization as infertile as she has been before. The only thing changed after IFV is, that new reproductive technique- adopted from animal breeding – mapped out the path to frozen-embryos, surrogate mothers, human embryonic-stem cell research, cloning, chimeras, genetic editing, genetic engineering, CRISPR-cas9 and whatever we used beforehand in animals or plants. IVF is the only way for same sex couples to have “children” who are genetically related to one of the partners. “All of this has resulted in the dehumanizing of woman- valued now only because they produce oocytes- to various maladies suffered by the children thus manufactured, and other tragic consequences,” wrote William E. May in the foreword of the book Promises of the New Biotechnologies. (3)

Pope Benedict XVI. addressed on Christmas 2010 the Sacred College of the Cardinals. He spoke of the great disorders of the moral state. He referred to sexual abuse of minors, the marketing of child pornography, sexual tourism, and the deadly abuse of drugs.

In addition, to mention “the plague of procured abortion and the wholesale murder of the unborn in the womb, justified as the exercise of the so-called right of the mother to choose.”  Under grave evil is this so-called “mercy-killing” that is also justified by invoking respect for quality of life. (4)

To interfere in God’s creation and lack all insights, or only have partial knowledge, might do more harm than good to our holistic, optimally tuned system of our blue Planet.  Progress might become regressive as we just begin to see the environmental impact of our actions.

The time in which science has had a redeeming character are long gone. Researchers are not seen as the “God’s in White” anymore. Contrary, science took on a threatening component with the discovery of Wernher von Braun’s nuclear power. Nevertheless, we dismiss the incalculable risks when experimenting with, and manipulating the sources of life,  our genomes. For example, everybody can alter the reproduction of insects by a relatively cheap CRISPR cas-9 kit in the backyard. A self-pronounced scientist could destroy our whole insect population. Genetic manipulated products (i.e. our agriculture) are dependent on insects. Almost daily, we can read that their population is declining. So far, we speculate if the dying of bees and other pollinators can be contributed to insecticides and pesticides that help GMO products to grow. We could achieve the reduction in the insect population by one lunatic person, who just happened to buy a CRISPR kit. By his actions, he would knock out industrious agricultural enterprises, who harvest the idea to feed the world? There are no ethical or moral boundaries and no institution or law exists, that would stop the achievements of our backyard CRISP interested entrepreneur. Instead there is a huge gap between modern biotechnologies and bioethics.

We have a responsibility towards following generations and should better know what we are doing, and not be taken by surprise, when we encounter unintended side effects?

Scientists are under the impression to recreate nature after their own image. We already speak about an anatomic reaction in the test tube. After creating test tube babies, we move on to test tube burgers. We create our own “paradise” with artificial milk, sugar, meat, etc., from the chemical lab. Or shall I say, we are to build our own “Gentopia” (4) and praise it as the promised land?

Sometimes, researchers giving their work a redeeming character. They are the one, who are capable to erase pain, suffering, hunger, diseases, malformations… in order that we gain eternal life on earth. 

At a human embryonic stem cell convention, Christian protesters have been condemned; accused of hindering the “good work” and intentions of scientists. The people who stood outside the meeting and held up signs to request the respect of human life, and not to create humane embryonic stem cell lines by destroying human beings at the beginning of their life, have been accused by the researchers inside the convention center. The protesters would lack the understanding and would not see the impact experiments have for the wellbeing of humanity. One famous scientist compared human embryonic stem cells to the fruits of the tree of life. Therefore, they would “only” need to gain the knowledge of how to differentiate human embryonic stem cells in order to create organs.

But did not St. Michael ask the question: “Who is like God”? Some scientist think they can compete with Creation. Therefore, “He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed a cherub with a flaming sword and turned to guard the way to the Tree of Life (Gen 3:24).”
